In most cases, there is no cost to you. Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, the VA, and most private insurance plans. If someone is unable to pay for hospice care, Gemini will ensure they are never turned away due to financial hardship.
It’s not always possible to determine exactly how much time someone has left. Hospice care is centered on improving quality of life, ensuring that the remaining time is as comfortable as possible. During hospice care, patients are encouraged to continue engaging in the activities they enjoy most. In some cases, due to the care provided by Gemini, a patient may even improve and “graduate” from hospice.
Hospice care should be started as soon as possible to take full advantage of the available services. Research indicates that the sooner hospice care begins, the better the overall experience. Many families have shared that they wish they had reached out to Gemini sooner.
Hospice care is available to individuals with a terminal condition expected to live for six months or less. This includes patients suffering from various conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s, COPD, stroke, cancer, heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, ALS, and many other terminal illnesses.
There’s a common misconception about hospice care. While our primary goal is to ensure comfort, Gemini does not prescribe any medications that intentionally cause or speed up death. In fact, studies show that, on average, individuals in hospice care tend to live longer than those who don’t choose hospice.
A clinical team assesses all medications, continuing those essential for the patient’s comfort. Reducing the number of unnecessary medications often results in an overall improvement in the patient’s condition.
No matter where the patient is whether it’s at home, in an assisted living facility, or a nursing home Gemini ensures that if a situation arises requiring hospital-level care to manage symptoms, they are partnered with local hospitals to provide that support.
Nurses and caregivers make regular visits to ensure the patient is comfortable, well cared for, and that the family receives the necessary support. Although hospice services are available 24/7, they do not offer continuous caregiving. Our community experts are here to help you understand how hospice care can best meet your needs.
Gemini provides complete care, but you’re not required to use anything you don’t want. We collaborate with you to develop a personalized care plan tailored to your preferences.
Gemini Hospice does not mandate a DNR (do-not-resuscitate) order. If you prefer resuscitation in case it’s needed, your wishes will be honored.
Hospice care is designed for patients who are focused on making their final journey as comfortable as possible. However, our Palliative Care Program offers pain and symptom relief for patients who are seeking a cure or undergoing treatments aimed at prolonging life.
Our aim is to help patients feel comfortable at home while minimizing the need for hospitalizations. However, patients always have the option to go to the hospital if they wish. If hospitalization is necessary due to the hospice diagnosis, there may be instances where the patient would need to be discharged from Gemini ‘s care.
Certainly. You have the right to discontinue hospice care at any time and for any reason.
Our top priority is the safety of patients and their families. Feel free to reach out for details about our COVID-19 protocols and the measures we are implementing to ensure their protection.
Gemini offers hospice care to COVID-positive patients, but only if they have a terminal condition. It is important to note that COVID-19, in isolation, is not regarded as a terminal illness without the presence of another disease or condition.
